Gustav Wilhelm Ludwig Struve(1858-1920)

Gustav was an Russian astronomer, an expert on the occultation of stars during a total lunar eclipse, and on stellar motion.
Gustav was born in Pulkovo, near St Petersburg. His faters name was Otto Wilhelm von Struve and he also studied astronomy.Gustav took on the family tradition by studyin astonomy at Dorpat (which is now called Tartu, Estonia). His research began at Pulkovo Observatory. In 1894 he moved to the University of Kharkov. He later became a professor and director of the observatory.Gustav was interested in precession and he investigated the whole question if motion within the Solar System.this led him to work on the position and motion of stars, and to an estimation of the rate of rotation of the Galaxy.

Friedrich Was born at altona, Germany. He was the son of Jacob Struve, and he was the first of an entire family of astonomers through four generations. He was the Father of Otto Stuve and the father of Otto Wilhelm Von Struve. Friedrich was also the grandfather of Hermann Struve. In 1817 he was equipped with a 9.5 inch refractor which he used in a maasive survey of binary stars from the north celestial pole to 15 degrees south.Friedrich measured 3112 binaries discovering over 2000 and he cataliged the results in stellarum duplicium mensurae micrometricace.

Generations of astronomers

Otto struve- you have already been informed that Otto was the son of Friedrich, but did you know that he was a decended from three generations of astonomers. he attended the University of Kharkov, but his education was interupted by Worl War One and the russian civil war, Due to This he became a refugee in Turkey. He also made detailed spectroscopic investigations of stars, especially close binaries and peculiar stars, the interstllar medium, where he discovered H II regions, and gaseous nebulae.

Hermann Struve- Herman Struvfe was born October 3, 1854 like his decendants he too was a astronomer, but he was less known unlike his Grand father (Friedrich Struve). He was best known for his observations of double stars.Hermann discovered a very large number of double stars, and in 1827 he published his double star catalogue he called it Catalogus novus stellarum duplicium.
