Apollo 1

The Crew
The Crew

The first scheduled Apollo manned mission came to be known as one of the worst tragedies in the history of spaceflight. It was going to be launched on February 21, 1967 about a month after the tragedy. This preflight test for Apollo 1 incident happened on January 27, 1967. The crew was made up of the following three men: Virgil Grissom, Edward White, and Roger Chaffee. The cause of their deaths was a fire in the Command Module. Therefore this postponed any manned launched until NASA cleared the Comand Module for manned flight. When they were ready for the next mission it was named Apollo 4, for some reason there were no missions ever designated Apollo 2 and Apollo 3.

On January 27, 1967 Virgil, Edward, and Roger all died because of a fire in the Command Module when they were just testing to launch Apollo 1. The fire began when the Command Module burned and started a fire. The investigation began and they found out that it started because of a workman that left a wrench behind the Command Module. There was not an immediate impact. The main impacts were mainly with time, cost, and schedules. But the overall impact of this event will appear in the future years by the total cost for the Apollo program.

What we learned...

ready, set, launch!
ready, set, launch!

I think that from this event a lot was learned. It was the first scheduled mission and it was not taken care of as seriously as it should have been. The main thing we learned is that every little step and procedures should be handled very carefully because one little thing done wrong could be the cause of a death or several deaths like in this one. Apollo 1 did not go as well as we would have liked it but we learned quite a bit and the same mistake did not happen again in any other Apollo's. The main effect was that the mens lifes were lost and i think that this event affected their families more than anything or anyone else because they lost very special and smart people. Knowledge was definetly gained from this event because it was the first and from there we made everything better even if it was just a little bit of difference.
